“The February 2025 Somalia Non-State Actors (SONSA) bulletin highlights a month of significant activity for Somali civil society. A key event was the launch of the EU in Somalia funded Gole-Kaab project, a collaboration between SONSA and NIMD. SONSA Chairperson Osman Moallim Mohidin welcomed the Speaker of the Somali Parliament, H.E. Aadan Mohamed Nur, and EU Deputy Ambassador Thomas Kieler to the launch. The Speaker emphasized the importance of close collaboration between civil society and Parliament to enhance accountability, and Ambassador Kieler underscored the project’s commitment to promoting inclusive representation and active participation in parliamentary proceedings, stating that “Civil Society Organizations are the voice of the people, championing transparency and accountability!” This initiative aims to empower citizens by increasing their awareness and participation in parliamentary proceedings, thereby promoting transparency and accountability within the government.”
“Beyond parliamentary engagement, SONSA actively participated in various activities shaping Somalia’s development and international relations. SONSA engaged with the UNDP Somalia strategy plan, providing valuable insights. SONSA Chairperson Osman Moallim Mohidin officially opened the “Somalia’s International and Regional Relations Dialogue Event,” co-hosted with KAS SIPODI EA, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in the civil society field. Nils Woermer from KAS SIPODI EA highlighted Turkey’s growing influence. The panel, moderated by Hon. Mohamed Mukhtar, included diverse experts who explored how Somalia can leverage its relationships with international partners to enhance its economic and security interests.”
“Furthermore, SONSA engaged with key government agencies, including the Immigration and Citizen Agency, to enhance collaboration. SONSA also established civil society working groups to enhance parliamentary oversight, and observed the opening of the Federal Parliament’s 6th Session, with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud outlining key national priorities. Additionally, SONSA commended the Somalia Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ achievements. The bulletin paints a picture of a vibrant and engaged civil society actively contributing to Somalia’s democratic development, governance, and international standing.”
