The Somali Non-State Actors (SONSA) played a pivotal role in March 2025, advocating for inclusive governance, peacebuilding, and legislative reforms. The organization warmly welcomed President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s call for political dialogue, emphasizing its alignment with civil society proposals and stressing the need for transparency and national unity. SONSA hosted an Iftar gathering to strengthen civil society’s role in peace efforts, reinforcing Somali-led initiatives and collaboration with political stakeholders.
Regionally, SONSA participated in the East African Civil Society Organizations Forum (EACSOF) Summit in Nairobi, highlighting the importance of citizen engagement in governance and policy-making. Domestically, SONSA attended key events, including the launch of Somalia’s National Transformation Plan (NTP 2025-2029), underscoring civil society’s role in supporting economic and governance reforms.
Legislative engagement was a major focus, with SONSA observers monitoring parliamentary sessions on critical bills, such as the Anti-Money Laundering Law, Financial Institutions Bill, and Somali Youth Justice Bill. They also consulted with religious scholars and policymakers to ensure financial legislation aligned with Islamic principles.
SONSA raised urgent concerns about civilian protection in conflict zones, calling for government action to mitigate displacement and casualties amid military operations. Additionally, the organization celebrated International Women’s Day, recognizing Somali women’s contributions to peacebuilding and societal transformation.
Capacity-building initiatives, such as training for CSOs on parliamentary oversight, further demonstrated SONSA’s commitment to transparency and accountability. Through these efforts, SONSA reinforced its mission to foster inclusive governance, sustainable peace, and civic participation in Somalia’s development.
