The Somali Civil Society Network (SONSA) actively engaged in key national and regional initiatives throughout July 2025, demonstrating its commitment to peace, governance, and development in Somalia.
In early July, SONSA participated in a National Policy Consultation on managing social media misuse, addressing challenges such as misinformation and hate speech, while emphasizing digital rights and online safety. SONSA also contributed to discussions on Somalia’s digital public infrastructure and governance frameworks in partnership with NIRA Somalia and UNDP.
SONSA was present at major forums including the 3rd East Africa Development Forum in Mogadishu and the IGAD Civil Society Forum for Peace in Nairobi, promoting regional peace and inclusive dialogue. Domestically, SONSA supported transparency efforts by overseeing secondary school exam marking in Banadir and calling for fair election processes amid concerns over public land sales and voter registration transparency.
The network strongly condemned deadly clashes in Balad-Hawo and urged peaceful dialogue between federal and Jubbaland authorities. SONSA also boosted election engagement through collaboration with the Integrated Electoral Support Group and the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.
SONSA welcomed student interns from Mogadishu University, strengthening youth involvement in civic work, and explored partnerships to enhance education advocacy. The organization concluded a capacity-building workshop to equip civil society with governance and policy tools.
In partnership with Mogadishu Forum and other stakeholders, SONSA promoted inclusive public participation in national budget planning. Additionally, it hosted a forum emphasizing digital rights for persons with disabilities, aligning efforts with international human rights frameworks.
